Welcome Message

Dear distinguished guests, esteemed colleagues, and friends,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Society for Organic Petrology (TSOP 2026), to be held in Beijing, China, from September 3 to 10, 2026. This meeting is jointly hosted by China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) (CUMTB) and Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT). All scientific sessions and conference accommodations will be arranged at the beautiful Nirvana Resort Beijing, providing a comfortable setting for focused discussion and networking.

TSOP 2026 brings together researchers and professionals from around the world to exchange the latest advances in organic petrology and related disciplines. This year’s program is organized around three key themes: Critical Minerals in Coal, AI for Coal Geology, and Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources. We hope these themes will inspire cross-disciplinary dialogue, new collaborations, and fresh perspectives on both fundamental science and energy resource-studies.

In addition to the technical program, we are pleased to offer post-conference excursions in Shanxi Province, China, with visits to the Datong Volcanic Cluster, the Jinhua Palace Coal Mine, the Yungang Grottoes, and the Antaibao Open Pit Mine. These excursions will provide an excellent opportunity to examine representative coal-bearing successions, major mining operations, and distinctive volcanic landforms, while further strengthening communication and collaboration among participants.

We wish you a productive, inspiring, and memorable TSOP 2026 in Beijing. Welcome to Beijing, and we look forward to seeing you!

About TSOP

TSOP is a nonprofit organization for scientists and engineers involved with coal petrology, kerogen petrology, organic geochemistry and related disciplines. We have over 200 members in 30 countries. TSOP was founded in Houston, USA in 1984 to consolidate and foster organizational activities related to organic petrology. The objectives of the Society, as listed in its bylaws are:

●  to promote research in organic petrology among members, and among scientific disciplines

●  to provide educational opportunities in organic petrology

●  to work for acceptable classifications of all types of sedimentary organic matter

●  to promote state-of-the-art technologies in organic petrology

●  to enhance professional and scientific interactions among all scientists and engineers

●  to inspire the highest standard of professional ethics of its members.

To accomplish these objectives, TSOP sponsors annual meetings, fieldtrips, and short courses, publishes a quarterly newsletter, research reports and other scholarly works, organizes and supports collaborative research projects. TSOP sponsors an annual meeting which features technical talks and poster presentations, business meetings, fieldtrips, short courses and social events.
